JATS XML made simple
JATS XML is the format the main databases require to index scholarly articles. With Index Production you get it straight from the author's Word file, together with PDF, HTML and EPUB, with no manual tagging.
What is JATS XML?
JATS (Journal Article Tag Suite) is an XML standard for describing scholarly articles: title, authors, affiliations, abstract, sections, tables, figures and references are tagged in a structured way. It is the ANSI/NISO Z39.96 standard and lets databases and repositories understand and reuse the content of each article.
Who requires it
PubMed Central
Requires JATS XML for full-text deposits.
SciELO
Its markup scheme, SciELO PS, is based on JATS.
Redalyc
Works with JATS XML in its markup and publishing model.
Crossref and repositories
Structured metadata makes deposits easier and improves visibility.
Why it is so hard to get right
Manual tagging
Tagging each article by hand takes hours and needs specialists.
Validation errors
Incomplete or malformed XML is rejected by databases.
Out-of-sync formats
If the XML is produced separately, every correction must be repeated in the PDF and HTML.
How Index Production generates it
Upload the Word file
Start from the author's manuscript, just as you work with it today.
Index Production structures the article
It identifies title, authors, affiliations, sections, tables, figures and references.
Review and download
You get JATS XML together with PDF, HTML and EPUB, all in sync.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know XML?
No. You work with the Word file and review the result; the XML is generated automatically.
Is it suitable for PubMed Central and SciELO?
It is generated to the JATS standard on which these databases base their requirements. We help you check each one's specific requirements.
Can I convert articles already published?
Yes, if you have the source files. We assess it with you depending on volume.
What if I use OJS?
Index Production works with OJS: you can generate the XML and the other formats without switching platforms.
